Meyer unseats Gordon in New Castle County Executive primary

Matt Meyer campaign

Wilmington lawyer Matt Meyer unseated incumbent Tom Gordon in the Democratic primary for New Castle County Executive - and is now looking ahead to the General Election in November.

"Tonight’s not the end," Meyer said. "I’m not the county executive, I’m not even the county executive elect. I’m simply the Democratic nominee and we need to move forward as hard as we have the last seven months, for the next two months. The work doesn’t end here."

Meyer entered the race as an unknown first time candidate.  Last night, he celebrated a 2,000 vote victory in an often contentious race.

"I hope this is a lesson to my sixth and seventh grade students: If you work hard, if you do your math — we did our math — and you keep your eyes on a dream, you just keep going forward relentlessly and you can do it," Meyer said.

And now Meyer says he's ready to take the next step in his quest to make a great county even better.

"If you know anything about me, you know that I decide to do things in life in my career life that nobody thinks I can do and I believe I can do them and I do them," he said. "I feel like we accomplished something but I feel like its the product of a lot of peoples' hard work."

Meyer adds he wants to address the stories of loss and root causes of violence in New Castle County.

Meyer will face Mark Blake in the November general election.  Blake handily won Tuesday’s Republican primary.
