Nemours & Operation Warm team up to hand out coats to selected children

Operation Warm

Nemours Children’s Health System and Operation Warm are teaming up to provide coats to children in need.

About 250 children have been selected to get new winter coats this weekend.

Heather Connolly is the director of development and programs for Operation Warm - a national non-profit dedicated to providing warm winter coats to children in need. She says, "Nearly one in five children in Delaware live in poverty. And as part of that, these children often do not have the basic needs to survive.”

Michelle Shorter is the director of community engagement at Nemours Children’s Health System. She says community engagement means knowing what the needs of area communities are, “And I can tell you it’s very important to us as an organization that promotes children’s health,  to ensure that children have what they need to survive the winter in a very healthy way - and one of those preparatory…..so having a strong coat.”

The two organizations will hand out the coats to the selected children on Saturday during an event at Delaware State University from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Delaware 87ers basketball team, flight squad and former Harlem Globetrotter Joe Richmond will be among the people personally assisting children in selecting their new coat.

Each child who gets a new coat has been pre-selected by the agencies. People cannot just show up to get new coats.
