No change in Delaware unemployment rate

Delaware Public Media

For the fifth month in a row, Delaware’s jobless rate remains steady.

Unemployment in Delaware hasn’t changed since July, with November’s report clocking in at 4.3 percent.

A little more than 450,000 people have jobs in the First State compared to the roughly 20,000 considered to be unemployed.

The federal jobless rate dipped significantly from October, landing at 4.6 percent.

Earlier this year, the state labor department predicted an unprecedented increase of 30,000 jobs in Delaware in 2016, but the second half of the year didn’t deliver those gains.

Monthly job losses are averaging about 2,000 each month, according to the report, but they say revised estimates will show steady gains.

The leisure and hospitality industries added 1,600 new jobs last month, while many non-agriculture sectors made cuts.

Overall, Delaware has added 5,500 new nonfarm jobs since this time last year.

County and major city non-seasonally adjusted unemployment crept down or remained steady in November:

  • Wilmington: Dropped from 6.3 to 5.8 percent
  • Dover: Down from 6.0 to 5.4 percent
  • Sussex County: Stayed flat at 4.1 percent
