No change for UD spring break

Delaware Public Media

University of Delaware will not change the timing of its spring break to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day.

A study by UD officials found that changing the time of its spring break to encompass St. Patrick’s Day would not have much of an effect on curbing binge drinking or partying.

College students in the region flock to campus to celebrate the holiday, as classes are in session during the week.

The study was in response to the death of a Skidmore College student who fell from a rooftop in Newark earlier this year.

Data from university police show there isn’t much difference in the number of incidents they respond to during St. Patrick’s Day compared to a random time period.

Students who gave feedback say changing the dates would mean some would choose an alternative date to celebrate.

The group recommends continuing campus outreach to tame UD’s drinking culture and offering an alcohol-free alternative event that weekend like a concert.
