Obamacare enrollment jumps by 3,000 in Delaware

Enrollment in health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act in Delaware continues to grow.

Through December 19th, a little more than 19,000 people in the First State have chosen a health insurance plan on the federal exchange.

That’s about 3,000 more people enrolled than at this time last year. Nationally, 6.4 million people have chosen a plan under Obamacare.

Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell is urging Republicans – who now have control over the White House and Congress – not to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“These are people’s cancer therapies, diabetes medications and mental health treatments that are on the line,” Burwell said.

She notes this kind of support from Americans will be tough to ignore.

“We’re hopeful that the conversation about the Affordable Care Act will move from rhetoric to reality and the reality of what this means to real people across the country,” Burwell said.

GOP lawmakers haven’t come out with concrete details about any replacement, but have gravitated towards keeping tax credits for low-income people while shifting them toward cheaper, high deductible plans.
