OT loss ousts UD field hockey team from NCAA tourney

The University of Delaware’s field hockey team’s season is over after a heartbreaking first round loss in the NCAA Division One tournament Saturday.

The 12th ranked Blue Hens fell at number 4 Virginia 4-3 in overtime at Virginia, bringing a quick end to their third straight NCAA tourney appearance.

The Cavaliers’ Riley Tata  scored two goals – including the game winner with just under 7 minutes left in OT.

The two teams were tied at 3 at halftime, then played a scoreless second half before heading to overtime.

The loss is UD’s second to Virginia this season.  The Hens also dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to UVa in Newark last month.

Delaware is now 1-5 all-time in first round NCAA tourney games.

The Blue Hens finish this season with a 16-6 record.
