Perdue Farms has stepped up to the plate to help Delaware families struggling with food insecurity.

Chicken is now on its way to families in need across Delaware, according to Food Bank of Delaware spokeswoman Kim Turner.

“So, we got a phone call from Perdue….they said they had 28,000 pounds of chicken that they wanted to donate. So of course we would never turn down such a donation. So it was delivered to our warehouse (in Milford) on Friday,” Turner said.

Turner says the chicken donation is especially helpful because meat and poultry can be expensive at the grocery store.

“You know, we are all at the grocery store and foods like meats (and poultry) are typically the most expensive items. So, by us being able to provide chicken to our partner agencies, that will definitely help families stretch their budgets, so they don’t have to worry about buying those fresh foods like chicken," said Turner.

She says the chicken will be distributed to families in need statewide through the Food Bank’s network of 536 hunger-relief program partners.

Perdue and the Food Bank have worked together for nearly three decades and together, help provide more than 13.6 million meals to seniors, families and children struggling with hunger.
