Police crackdown on intoxicated boating this Fourth of July weekend

Many Delawareans will take to First State waterways this weekend. And with all the festivities, police will on the lookout for inebriated boaters.

DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources is launching Operation Dry Water this weekend to help keep people safe on the water.

"It’s a national awareness and enforcement campaign focusing on reducing the number of alcohol and drug related accidents and fatalities," Lt. John McDerby said.

"This weekend we’ll have targeted patrols throughout the state in all three counties."

Buzzed boating can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. The legal blood alcohol limit is the same, .08 percent.

McDerby urges boaters to stay sober or have a non-drinking designated boat operator on board.

Last year police stopped 1,400 boaters and issued 20 citations.
