Pop up museum to recognize Immigrant Heritage Month

Delaware Public Media

The Delaware Historical Society is hosting a pop up museum event entitled “Immigrants Welcome” this coming Saturday.

The immigration-themed pop up museum hopes to entice Delawareans to share objects connected to their family heritage and culture.

Delaware Historical Society’s Katie McDade says it’s part of recognizing June as Immigrant Heritage Month.

“If your great grandmother came from Poland and she had a necklace that sort of came with the family, if you wanted to display that," McDade said. "So if you yourself are from Mexico and you wanted to share something from your family. It’s immigrants near and far, past or present – anything related to immigration you’d like to share.”

While the display isn’t permanent, McDade says she hopes to create a photo display called “Faces of Delaware” – made up of images of those who stop by Saturday - and keep that up throughout the month of June.

There’s also a family program called “An Immigrant’s Journey” Saturday June 17th. McDade says that’s based on a museum school program about immigration, with a section on fitting in or standing out.

“And a lot of that relates to food – so today, when we think of food, everything seems American," McDade said. "But in the 19th century, there might be certain foods that would make you stand out, like pasta or bagels.”

Kids will also be asked what items they’d pack for a long long voyage overseas.
