Procession scheduled for correctional officer's funeral

Delaware Public Media

Drivers in the Dover area this weekend should expect delays on Routes 1 and 13 due to a funeral procession for a prison guard who died during a hostage crisis at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center last week.

Delaware State University will hold two public viewings for Sgt. Steven Floyd at Memorial Hall. The first runs from 6-7 p.m. Friday, followed by a Masonic service.

A second viewing at Memorial Hall is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Both services are open to the public.

Floyd's body will then be interred during a private ceremony at Barratt’s Chapel in Frederica Saturday afternoon.

State police say Floyd was killed due to unspecified trauma when up to 120 inmates held him and three others hostage during the 19-hour standoff at Vaughn Correctional Center. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
