Purzycki looks to improve parking in Wilmington

Delaware Public Media

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki is calling on a public/private partnership to explore the city’s parking and driving issues.

The group dubbed the Downtown/Neighborhood Street Parking Optimization Team, or SPOT for short, will look at ways to improve driving and parking in Wilmington.

"So (Purzycki) has assigned this team to come up with a series of recommendations which will be implemented in a short period of time. We have 45 days to present our findings to him," AAA Mid-Atlantic's Ken Grant said.

Grant is a member of the 10 person SPOT team, along with City Council Member Michelle Harlee, Will Minster of Downtown Visions and David Curtis of the Mayor’s Office.

SPOT will consider options like lowering parking ticket fines or making those tickets easier to appeal, as well as updating the city's aging parking meters.

An internal city audit found Wilmington loses thousands of dollars each month because of broken parking meters.

Another audit found the average time it takes to appeal a parking ticket is 400 days.

SPOT will make its recommendations to the Mayor’s Office in late May.
