Recall of flour precipitated by e-coli scares in 20 states

Lisa Lancaster

You might want to check your baking pantry for three brands of flour that could be contaminated by a strand of e-coli.

The brands are Gold Medal Flour, Signature Kitchens Flour and Gold Medal Wondra Flour, produced between November and December 2015.

The Delaware Division of Public Health released the advisory Sunday. The products were initially sold in Delaware supermarkets Super Giant and Acme, but have since been removed from store shelves.

However, Chief of the state’s Health Systems Protection section Thom May says the flour remaining in home pantries should be trashed just to err on the side of caution.

He also advises against consuming uncooked batter, and describes some of the symptoms of the illness associated with the contamination.

Basically, you’re going to become very sick very fast. You’re going to end up with either diarrhea or bloody diarrhea," May said.

He says if left untreated, the condition can be deadly.

While no cases have been reported in Delaware so far, 38 cases have been reported from 20 states across the country.

May says this contamination has never before happened with a flour product.
