The University of Delaware’s has settled on a new football coach, turning to a conference foe to find the next man to lead its storied football program.
Danny Rocco is leaving the Blue Hens' Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival, the University of Richmond, to take the reins at UD.
In five seasons at Richmond, Rocco has complied a 43-22 record and three straight NCAA playoff appearances, including a trip to the tournament’s final four a year ago. His team posted a 10-4 record, including a 31-17 win over Delaware and another playoff bid.
Prior to that he last year, he went 47-20 in six season at Liberty.
"During our search we wanted to find someone who had demonstrated outstanding success not only on the field but in building young men as leaders, citizens, and achievers. In Coach Rocco we found the perfect fit and someone who is committed to excellence in every area," said UD Athletic Director Chrissi Rawak in a statement. "We are excited to see the direction he takes us under his leadership. His impact will be felt immediately.”
UD fired Dave Brock back in October, midway through his fourth season. He went 19-22 with no post-season appearances. Dennis Dottin-Carter, co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, completed the season as interim head coach, leading the Hens to a 2-3 record
Rocco will try to bring the UD program back to its past glory. It has six national championships, but its last playoff appearance was in 2010 and the team has been .500 or worse in 4 of the six seasons since.
“I am very excited to take on this challenge, recognizing that I have full and total support from President [Dennis] Assanis and AD Chrissi Rawak," said Rocco in a statement released by UD. "I have always had an appreciation for the history and tradition of Delaware Football and I am highly motivated to return Delaware to its winning ways and to a position of national prominence.”
The new coach will have an experienced roster to work with as he takes over. Only 3 full-time starters graduate this year.
The school plans to formally introduce Rocco Wednesday at a 1 p.m. event at the Bob Carpenter Center.
