Delaware’s junior Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware) says he’s pushing GOP Senators to pass his legislation protecting the special counsel investigating Russian election interference.
The Democrat’s renewed push comes a day after FBI agents raided the home and business of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s attorney.
Coons said he’s more worried than ever that Trump will fire Special Counsel Bob Mueller.
“Many of my colleagues, Republican and Democrat, have said that would cause a Constitutional crisis, that would undermine dramatically the rule of law and the president should not do this,” he said.
Trump has suggested that he might fire Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who approved the raid. Coons’ legislation only protects the special counsel.
But Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) says legislation protecting Mueller is not necessary.
