State confirms first Zika case in Delaware

CDC
This CDC map shows countries with active Zika transmission. Travelers, especially pregnant women, are advised to avoid areas with high Zika rates.

The first case of the Zika virus in Delaware has been confirmed.

State public health officials say it's in an adult woman who is not pregnant and who contracted the mosquito-borne virus while traveling.

Zika is currently widespread in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Several cases have been confirmed in U.S. states.

The virus causes only mild symptoms in some adults who contract it -- which can happen through mosquito bites and sexual contact, among other potential means.

The biggest concern is its link to severe birth defects in babies of pregnant women who catch it. Those women are being urged not to travel to affected areas.

Delaware's DPH will hold a press conference on the Zika case Wednesday.
