State Rep. Miro becomes eighth lawmaker to retire this year

House Minority Caucus
Following his announcement on the floor of the House of Representatives this afternoon, State Rep. Joe Miro receives an embrace from State House Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst.

State Rep . Joseph Miro is retiring this year after serving in the Delaware House for 20 years.

The Pike Creek Valley Republican immigrated from Cuba without his parents at the age of 13. He was a teacher for 31 years in the Christina School District. He served on the New Castle County Council from 1992 until he was elected to state legislator in 1998.

Miro said he hopes his successor will develop the same kind of relationships with constituents he did.

“Hopefully, whoever replaces me takes the same route that I took in terms of walking the pavement and knocking on doors and doing all the things that you have to do," he said. "Emails, phone calls and that sort of things.”

Despite a cancer scare about four years ago, Miro said he’s perfectly healthy and is retiring to travel and spend time with his family. He points to helping hundreds of his constituents with their concerns on issues like roads and schools as his biggest accomplishment.

Miro is the fifth state representative to retire this year. Three state senators have also decided not to seek re-election.
