This year’s U.S. Senate race in Delaware just got another candidate.
Republican Sussex County Councilman Rob Arlett made the traditional three-county tour to announce his candidacy Monday.
He’s the latest to seek the seat currently held by Democrat Tom Carper.
"It’s all about bringing back the voice of the people into Washington. And I think what we have in office today is a partisan politician who has been in office for 42 years, who is out of touch and ineffective for Delaware. And that’s what this is all about; it’s bringing and hearing the voice of Delawareans back into Washington as we must do and as we need,” Arlett said.
Arlett says he would be more effective than Senator Carper in D.C. because he is “of the people” and “listens to the people.”
Arlett adds, if elected, he’d focus on several issues, including jobs and the economy.
“I want to bring Delaware back from the history of where we were once and make us be proud, if you would, again. And I want to bring jobs and grow our economy and keep our families together. I think that’s really critical. Right now we have a population in our state that is losing...it’s a net loss, which means there are more people leaving our State versus moving in,” said Arlett.
Arlett says he’d also like to see immigration reform made a priority.
Arlett has been a Sussex County councilman for three years. He also ran President Trump’s campaign in Delaware in 2016.
Arlett is set to face former PayPal executive Gene Trouno in a Republican primary race in September. Carper also faces a fall primary against Dover community activist and Air Force veteran Kerri Harris.
