Thanksgiving holiday travel to break 12-year record

Delaware Public Media

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the holiday travel volume this year will break a 12-year record.

AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Kathleen Miller says “T” is not just for turkey this Thanksgiving.

“It’s also for travel. And as we’re seeing from our travel forecast in a very big way, we’ve got a lot of folks taking to the roads, to the air and to the rails to get where they’re going for Thanksgiving," Miller said.

Miller and AAA estimate that more than 137,000 Delaware residents will travel 50 miles or more away from from home for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend — a 3.2-percent increase since 2016.

Miller says this Thanksgiving will see the most Americans carving out time to visit family and friends since 2005. She attributes the increase to a strong economy and labor market, which are generating rising incomes and fueling a strong year for the travel industry.

Nationally, AAA projects 50.9 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving — a 3.3-percent increase over last year.
