Two cycling events hit Dover area roads Saturday

If you’re driving through Dover Saturday morning you may notice a throng of cyclists on the road.

Two cycling events kick off in the state capital Saturday.

2,000 cyclists are expected to show up at Legislative Hall Saturday morning for the 30th annual Amish Country Bike Tour. That tour officially starts at 8:00 a.m. but riders are allowed to hit the course anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

The route spans multiple routes of varying lengths along rural roadways between Dover, Harrington, Marydel and Hartly.

"It's a great way to see part of the state you may not normally see in a car," said John Doerfler, with Kent County Office of Tourism and an organizer of the Amish Country Bike Tour.

The second tour is the Bike MS: Bike to the Bayfundraiser for multiple sclerosis, which is expected to attract about 1,500 cyclists. Riders will be leaving from Delaware Technical Community College’s Terry Campus in Dover at 7:15 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Saturday.

They’ll follow a rural route through central and lower Delaware to Rehoboth Beach, and retrace that route back to Dover Sunday.

No roads will be closed because of the events but both tours will briefly converge along Salisbury Road between Walker Road and North Street Saturday morning between 7:00 and 9:00.

DelDOT officials warn drivers to use caution when traveling on that road between those times.
