UH-1 "Huey" helicopter pilots to be honored in Dover Saturday

During the Vietnam War, pilots of UH-1 “Huey” helicopters helped transport more than 900,000 soldiers to safety. And more than 200 UH-1 “Huey” helicopter pilots lost their lives in the Vietnam War while transporting those soldiers.

Members of the Vietnam Dustoff Association, also called “a flight of rusty eagles,” are coming to Delaware this weekend for their annual convention.

Vietnam Veterans of America Kent County Chapter 850 President Joe Startt says members will be honored at the Veterans Memorial Park in Dover. Startt knows first-hand about the Huey pilots; he was transported by one when he was wounded in 1969.

Saturday’s 10 a.m. ceremony is open to the public and will be held under the UH-1 on display at Veterans Memorial Park. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the County Administration Building.

The Dustoff crews will also be treated to lunch while they’re in Delaware at Dover Air Force Base and they’ll  also get a special tour of the Air Mobility Command Museum.
