Underground Comic-Con swoops into Wilmington

Underground Comic-Con

The Underground Comic-Con in Wilmington highlights superheroes outside of the mainstream.

When Jabaar Brown started the Underground Comic-Con four years ago he had a simple goal: give kids an inclusive space to talk about comics.

"They see black, white, Latino, gay, straight, Muslim and Christian and they’re all together. And you know what? They’re all smiling," Brown said.

Brown is the owner and publisher of Underground Comixxx. His books feature strong, contemplative female and African American characters. He wants his comics to show kids that they don’t need to be like everyone else.

"You know I’m always grinding on giving somebody a message. You always have to learn something," he said.

Brown said he doesn’t want the event to be known as a black comic con, encouraging people of all backgrounds to come learn about superheroes that aren’t in your average DC or Marvel books.

The Underground Comic-Con starts at 5 p.m. Friday as part of the Art loop at the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington.
