Unemployment continues to drop in Delaware

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s unemployment rate is dropping and earlier reports of seasonal job loss late last year have turned out to be exaggerated.

Survey data had suggested a loss of about 200 jobs in the First State toward the end of 2017, but recent payroll data - which is much more accurate - indicates that was not the case. In fact, the state added about 2,900 jobs last year.

The biggest variance was in Accommodations and Food Service. The survey showed that sector losing about 1,200 jobs when it actually gained 30.

Additionally, Delaware’s unemployment rate dropped last month from 4.3% to 4.2% percent with 20,100 Delawareans making claims. It has steadily dropped all year from 4.5% in January.

The national unemployment rate also dropped to 3.9% from 4.1% percent in April.
