Unseasonably warm weather hits Delaware

Delaware Public Media

It is technically winter, but barbeque weather is on the way to the First State. The National Weather Service said we could see near record highs the rest of this week.

Temperatures should rise into the 70s the next few days with plenty of sunshine.

Meteorologist Lance Franck said normal highs in late February hover around the low-to-mid 40s.

"Comparing the high temperatures we’re expecting over the next several days to those temperatures, we’re generally going to be around 20-25 degrees above average," Franck said.

In Wilmington a record high isn't out of the question, he said. "For Thursday, we’d have to get to 72 (degrees). That’s possible."

Breaking Friday's record high of 78 degrees might be a bit of a stretch with temperatures forecast to top out in the low-70s, but anything is possible.

The warm weather should last through Saturday, with temps in the mid-40s expected for Sunday.
