USDA looking for crop feedback

Delaware Public Media

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will reach out to Delaware farmers over the next few weeks for feedback on June crop acreage and stock levels.

More than 300 Delaware farmers will be asked to share information such as crop acreage, grain stock, agricultural activity and land uses.

Delaware Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Stacey Hofmann says this helps give a picture of what crops will be available on the market in the fall.

"It provides an accurate, clear and really an unbiased indication of agricultural production across the state and the country," Hofmann said.

And in turn, agriculture officials use that information to make decisions related to area farmers, legislation and businesses.

Hofmann says these surveys act as forecasts. Last year, the department forecasted 22,000 acres of planted barley, but 32,000 were planted.

The upcoming survey follows a March prospective plantings survey.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service will publish the results in acreage and grain reports that will be released in the end of June.
