The third time was the charm for Milford School District in finding support for a tax referendum.
After rejecting plans to increase taxes in each of the last two school years, voters said “yes” Tuesday to the district’s latest proposal to bolster its operating budget.
The preliminary vote count was 1,621 to 1,282 in favor of a tax hike that adds about $3 million per year to the district’s bottom line. That’s a 56-to-44 percent margin.
District officials say the increase will allow them to address their current $1.2 million deficit, while offsetting drops in state funding and restoring some programs and curriculum cut due to spending constraints.
The average district resident is expected to pay about $140 more per year in property tax under the approved referendum.
