VSA art show starts at DSU before statewide tour

Celebration of Creativity 2017, an art show exhibiting work by individuals with disabilities is on display at Delaware State University.

VSA Delaware, an arts education nonprofit, puts on the annual show, Celebration of Creativity. And each year, VSA Director Jennifer Gunther said the exhibit is so good they take it on the road after its debut.

"This artwork, after it leaves here, will go to the Delaware Children's Museum, the Biggs Museum of Art. It goes to the Redding County Building Lobby Gallery, and Wilmington University," Gunther said.

VSA staff work with each artist, from kids to adults, to develop an original piece of artwork.

"So there is a lot of one-on-one, but there is a lot of independent choices I want them to make. They get to choose the colors. They get to choose (if) they want to use a marker or colored pencil," VSA educator Kizzie Cobb said.

VSA staff works with artists step by step to develop fine motor skills by using the tools of the trade: brushes, scissors and in some cases electric drills.

"And the final thing is just valuing their artwork and teaching them to value their artwork by matting and framing it and putting it up in the gallery." Gunther said.

Celebration Creativity 2017 is on display through June 16 at the DSU Arts Center/Gallery in Dover.

Delaware Public Media' s arts coverage is made possible, in part, by support from theDelaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
