Weaker winter storm still brings flooding, road closures

Rehoboth's boardwalk flooded in last month's blizzard, which proved far more severe than the winter weather that hit Monday night.

DelDOT says Monday night's storm didn't hit as hard as expected -- but they still saw some flooding on coastal roads in Southern Delaware.

Route 1 reopened around 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon after flooding between Bethany and Dewey Beach.

"We had some extreme high tides with the storm, so we were able to get the road open as soon as we could," says DelDOT spokesman Jim Westhoff.

He notes that after last month's blizzard hit as hard as expected, they weren't taking any chances with this week's forecast.

"Well, I think we were prepared as well as we could be," he says. "We prepare for the worst and hope for the best at DelDOT, because … it's just a challenge with Delaware weather. It's just hard to predict."

There are still winter weather and coastal flood advisories in effect off and on through early Wednesday morning. Westhoff says an overnight low around 30 could cause roads to re-freeze, though they've been salted.
