Wilmington attorney Matthew Meyer to run for New Castle County Executive

Delaware Public Media

Wilmington native Matthew Meyer is challenging incumbent New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon this fall, announcing his intentions to run in September’s Democratic primary.

Meyer says he wants to address what he calls a lack of leadership, lack of transparency and lack of service in current county government.

“The last few months I’ve been traveling around the county just listening to people and time and again that’s what I hear. That there are serious problems, and in many cases the most serious problems we’ve seen in generations in terms of job loss, in terms of education.”

Meyer adds he’s also concerned but education issues and unemployment.

“My career is about public service and about doing what’s right for the people of New Castle County and the various communities," Meyer said. "What I hear from my neighbors here in the county is that that’s not the case right now with our current leadership.”

He left the Wilmington area for college, became an attorney and spent time as an economic adviser for the U.S. Department of State in Iraq.

He also taught at two local schools – Prestige Academy and Bancroft Elementary.

Meyer has not officially filed to run yet.  His opponent, current New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon, filed Thursday.
