Wilmington resident James Spadola runs for Delaware State Auditor

James Spadola is hoping to replace retiring State Auditor Tom Wagner this November.

Spadola said his unique background makes him the best candidate for the job. The 35 year-old Wilmington resident is an Iraq War veteran and former Newark police officer.

Spadola is currently the director of partnerships at the nonprofit Coded by Kids and vice-chairman at the Wilmington Housing Authority. He said he wants to use technology to help fight fraud and waste.

“Once we really get our hands around the data, the immense amount of data that the Delaware government encompasses, we can be smart about predicting where some fraud might occur,” he said.

Spadola said with Democrats controlling the state legislature and the governor’s office, the state’s fiscal watchdog should be from the minority party. Wagner is also a Republican.

“And I think with my background in law enforcement and finance, I’m uniquely positioned to best serve the people of Delaware,” he said.

Spadola worked in finance for less than two years, as the underwriting manager for Merchant Cash and Capital LLC in New York.

He unsuccessfully challenged Democratic State Sen. Harris McDowell for his seat in 2016.

Spadola will face the winner of September’s three-way Democratic primary for auditor in the general election.
