Wilmington Univ. names First State's first African American woman college president

Dr. LaVerne Harmon will be Wilmington University's next president.

Wilmington University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved

Dr. LaVerne Harmon’s selection as the school’s next president.

 

Harmon will be the first African American woman to be named the president of a university or college in the First State.

 

She worked at Wilmington University since 1989 - holding numerous positions while earning undergraduate and graduate degrees from Wilmington University and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

 

She’s served as the university’s executive vice president since 2014.

 

Harmon will take over for Dr. Jack Varsalona at the end of the current academic year.

Varsalona recently announced his retirement effective June 30, 2017.

Under his leadership, Wilmington College became Wilmington University with a total enrollment of over 21,500 students.
