Delaware is encouraging businesses in the state to install electric car charging stations.

The state launched a rebate program late last year that takes care of most of the cost. But many businesses are not yet taking advantage of the program. The state is offering rebates to help companies cover the price of the equipment through June 2018.

Kathy Harris, DNREC Clean Transportation Planner, said one benefit of workplace charging stations is it influences employees make more sustainable vehicle choices.

Local environmental groups joined Wilmington city officials and businesses on a walking tour Wednesday to tout the benefits the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI, has provided the state’s largest city.

Stephanie Herron, the outreach coordinator with the Delaware Sierra Club, said environmental outreach in Delaware is important because the state’s location along the coast makes it particularly vulnerable to the effects of sea level rise.

Delaware and eight other states launched RGGI in 2009, seeking
