State lawmakers are trying to knock out about a quarter of Delaware’s projected $395 million budget shortfall in one move.

Lawmakers returned from Easter break this week to find the budget shortfall they need to overcome got even larger while they were gone.  This month DEFAC revenue estimates pushed the deficit to 396 million dollars.  And that got people talking --- from state employees to GOP leadership.  And as our political reporter James Dawson has been reporting, they have some ideas they want Gov. John Carney and the Democratic majority at Leg Hall to hear.

We also saw this week a new proposal to clean up Delaware waterways and a somewhat surprising bill related to abortion.

Gov. John Carney’s 2018 budget proposal is already getting some initial blowback from state lawmakers.

His calls to raise personal income tax rates and cut education spending were among the ideas that drew criticism immediately after the governor unveiled his plan Thursday.

Carney’s proposal to cut $37 million from what it currently sends to school districts raised eyebrows on both sides of the aisle.

During the 2016 campaign and since winning the election, Carney has promised a budget “reset” that addresses the state’s long term structural budget issues and he's been holding town hall meetings across the state to discuss these issues solicit public input.
