An inmate inside James T. Vaughn Correctional Center the night of a hostage standoff is claiming guards beat prisoners and denied them basic needs following the crisis in a new federal lawsuit.

Prison reform activists and inmates’ families are frustrated by how slowly the state is moving to review the a hostage situation at a state prison that left one guard dead earlier this month.

The last time Connie Runyon said she heard from her son, an inmate in the C building at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, was the night the hostage situation began.

 

Gov. John Carney (D) is appointing two former judges to lead an independent review of what sparked a prison hostage crisis earlier this month that left one correctional officer dead.

Current and former lawmakers are banding together with clergy, calling for an independent civil rights investigation into conditions across state prisons.

State officials have released a cause of death for the correctional officer killed during a standoff at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center earlier this week.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science completed its autopsy of Sgt. Steven Floyd Friday and are calling his death a homicide by trauma.

Just hours after the hostage standoff at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center ended Thursday morning with one corrections officer dead, several demonstrators gathered near the facility. They say they don’t trust the police side of the story, and demand an independent investigation.

 

One correction officer is dead after a 19-hour standoff at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna.

 

Both Delaware and Maryland State Police and other officials broke into C building at James T. Vaughn around 5:00 a.m. Thursday using a backhoe.
