AAA Mid-Atlantic: Christmas holiday travel volume to set all-time record

Delaware Public Media

‘Tis the season for travel, and in record numbers.

AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman Ken Grant says the holiday travel volume is expected to set an all-time record.

“We are looking at more than a third of the state of Delaware, the population of the state of Delaware, approximately 294,000 people plan to travel during this end of the year holiday season,” Grant said.

Grant adds the majority of those people, almost 91 percent, will travel by car.

Grant attributes the 3% increase in travel this year to a number of factors.

“We attribute this to the reasonable gas prices. It’s not as low as it was last year, but still fairly reasonable, the strong economy and high consumer confidence,” said Grant.

He says travel volume has increased year-over-year for every major holiday weekend in 2017 - Memorial Day, 4th of July and Thanksgiving - and the agency is projecting the same for the year-end holiday period.

Nationally, AAA projects just over 107 million people will be traveling and, like in the First State, that’s a 3-percent increase over a year ago.

The year-end holiday period by the way, is defined as Saturday, December 23 to Monday, January 1, 2018.
