Those living in the Appoquinimink School District head to the polls today to vote on a combined $70 million tax referendum.
Most of the $70 million in new tax revenue would go toward building new elementary, middle and high schools, while also renovating two others within the district.
The new elementary school will be built in Whitehall, while the middle and high school will join the Fairview Campus built in 2009.
District officials say enrollment has grown by more than 750 students over the past two years and added 3,000 kids in the past decade.
They say the other $3 million will go toward operating expenses, like keeping teacher salaries competitive, investing in new technology and paying for supplies.
If both pieces pass, property taxes will increase by about 23 cents per $100 of value. That’s about $15 more a month for an average $250,000 home or just over $182 per year.
Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
