AstraZeneca cuts 120 jobs in Fairfax

Delaware Public Media

AstraZeneca is laying off 120 Delaware employees as part of a larger cut in its workforce.

Those layoffs will take place at the pharmaceutical giant’s Fairfax headquarters. Overall, 700 workers will get pink slips nationwide just before Christmas.

In August, AstraZeneca announced it was selling part of its Fairfax campus, but that it intended to either lease that space or find a new location in Delaware.

An AstraZeneca spokesperson said, "We continue to face loss of exclusivity impacts from many of our legacy products and work to compete in an ever-changing external environment."

The company reported a three percent drop in revenue in its most recent financial report due to that increased competition from generic drugs.

In a statement, Governor-elect John Carney (D) says he’s committed to helping affected workers land new jobs as quickly as possible

Following the layoffs, AstraZeneca will employ about 1,500 people in Delaware.
