Brandywine Valley SPCA opens facility early to aid animals affected by Hurricane Florence

Brandywine Valley SPCA

The Brandywine Valley SPCA is lending a helping hand to shelter pets impacted by Hurricane Florence.

There’s a combination of issues the BVSPCA and others are trying to address.

Not only did Florence leave some family pets displaced, but flooded shelters also leave animals needing a place to stay.

BVSPCA marketing director Linda Torelli says it’s opened the organization’s Rescue and Rehab Center in Georgetown early to serve as an evacuation hub for shelter animals in the Carolinas.

“We’ve been planning to open a rescue and rehab center early next year. One of the main purposes would be exactly for this type of need. And we decided to open the Center early. We saw the need and it’s a unique opportunity for us to be able to take in a lot of animals who are at-risk right now in North Carolina. So we’re opening our doors early,” said Torelli.

Torelli says the first animals to arrive, 40 dogs, are expected to arrive in Delaware Tuesday.  They’re being brought in by a BVSPCA deployment team that joined Best Friend Animal Society to evacuate the Cumberland County Animal Services Shelter in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

70 cats are expected later this week.

Torelli expects some animals to be up for adoption once intake and animal care is performed by staff and volunteers.

Information on how to assist BVSPCA can be found at the organization's website.
