The Christina School Board voted Thursday to appoint Dr. Robert Andrzejewski as its acting Superintendent.
The board settled on the former Red Clay superintendent after an over hour long discussion behind closed doors in Executive Session.
"He has been a superintendent. And we don’t have to time to put somebody in and train them. Or put somebody in who has no experience at upper district level administration. At least that was the view of the four of us in there," said Board President Harrie-EllenMinnehan.
As she indicated, the vote was close - 4-3. Shirley Saffer and John Young voted no, saying they felt it would be better to hold interviews with several candidates. Young opted to sit out the Executive Session that preceded the vote.
"At our last meeting we decided we were going to primarily focus on creating a shortlist and evaluating those people through an interview process. We had roughly ten total applicants, so my expectation was that we’d whittle that down to 3, maybe 4, and then proceed with an interview."
Board President Harrie-Ellen Minnehan told Delaware Public Media that that type of interview process would have taken too long.
Board Member George Evans responded that the Christina School District has “massive issues that we need to resolve,” and said it was time to act.
Dr. Andrzejewski, who has worked in state schools since the 1970s, will step in while Superintendent Freeman Williams is on leave.
