The Christina School District is hoping to make up for an embarrassing mold and pest problem at one of its schools by adopting a more proactive approach.
When Wilmington City Councilwoman Sherry Dorsey-Walker found out there was mold, mildew, maggots and mice at Pulaski Elementary School this past summer she wasn’t frustrated.
“I was disgusted. We should never allow something like that to happen in our schools,” she said.
But she said she’s pleased with the response so far, although it’s been a little slow in her opinion.
The Department of Public Health has helped the Christina School District rid Pulaski Elementary of its mold and pests. And now custodians from the school district will use upcoming holiday vacations to search other schools for signs of mold or pest infestation.
“Especially areas where there is water, sinks or bathrooms. Any type of place where there are leakages that could be occurring because that’s the source of a lot of issues in any type of building,” according to Wendy Lapham, a spokeswoman for the Christina School District.
She said the upcoming sweeps represent a new proactive strategy the district has adopted following its unfortunate Pulaski incident.
In the future, the district hopes to catch any issues well before they become a major problem.
