Deadline approaches for scam victims who used Western Union to file claims

Delaware Public Media

Delaware consumers eligible to get money back in a legal settlement with Western Union have a month left to do so.

The settlement covers people who sent money to scammers through Western Union between January 2004 and January 2017.

To file a claim, people need to log on a Federal Trade Commission website before February 12.

Some people who have already reported their losses to Western Union, the Federal Trade Commission or other government agencies will be mailed by the claims administrator with a Claim ID and a PIN number to use when filing a claim online.

The settlement between state attorneys general and Western Union was the result of allegations that scammers used the company’s money transfer system to get payments from victims even after Western Union knew about the issue and received hundreds of thousands of complaints about a variety of scams.

Western Union agreed to pay $586 million for refunds to affected consumers. Delaware also received just under $44,000 for its Consumer Protection Fund as part of the settlement.
