Delaware beach residents earn $4 million-plus using Airbnb

Delaware beach residents have earned over $4 million using Airbnb.

Known for having some of the most popular beaches in the Mid-Atlantic region, Delaware residents are receiving a huge economic boost by sharing their homes with spring and summer travelers.

Airbnb reports that between May 1 and September 30, hosts in Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes, and Rehoboth Beach earned nearly $4.2 million connecting with renters through its website, an increase of over 100-percent from the same time in 2016.

“We’re very excited that Delaware residents are taking advantage of our platform in the home-sharing industry to use their homes, extra space in their homes to make extra income, to make ends-meet, to support their families and also make improvements to their homes,” said Airbnb Spokeswoman Crystal Davis.

Davis attributes the increase to the popularity of Delaware’s beaches.

“We know that there are beautiful settings; families like to come there, college students like to come there year-after-year. And we think that residents of Delaware are realizing that with the robust tourism and economic industries, because of the beaches, that they can also participate and use their homes to connect with travelers and tourists that visit there,” said Davis.

Davis notes Bethany Beach had the biggest spike in earnings.

And the appeal seemed to be strong regionally with Washington D-C, Baltimore, New York City and Philadelphia topping the list of cities of origin for Delaware beach rentals.
