Delaware sees 4th and 5th flu-related deaths

Delaware Public Media

Division of Public Health reports two elderly men with underlying health conditions died from flu-related causes this month. One man was from New Castle County and the other from Kent County.

Those are the fourth and fifth flu-related deaths this year in Delaware.

Officials report the number of flu cases in the First State continues to significantly outpace a year ago. This year the state has seen almost 1,300 lab confirmed cases compared to just 58 last year at this time.

But according to DPH, last year saw an unusually late spike in flu cases.

Young people 24 and under are being hit especially hard this season, with 54 percent of flu cases in Delaware occurring in that age range.

It’s still not too late to get a flu shot. DPH recommends getting vaccinated, washing your hands covering coughs and sneezes, as well as staying home when you’re ill.
