Fewer motorists were on the road in Delaware during the Fourth of July holiday this year, according to DelDOT toll numbers.
Last year, more than 1 million motorists passed through the First State’s three main toll plazas over the holiday weekend. This year, DelDOT said that number fell to just over 950,000 vehicles.
That translated into a drop in toll revenue for the First State.
DelDOT estimated the state collected $2.6 million in tolls over this year’s four day holiday period — down from $2.8 million in tolls during last year's four-day Fourth of July weekend.
Last year's holiday included Friday through Monday. This year's holiday included Saturday through Tuesday.
Saturday was the busiest day on the roads during this year’s holiday. Nearly 286,000 cars rolled through the I-95 toll plaza and the two Route 1 plazas at Biddle’s Corner and Dover.
