Starting next year, Delaware’s Division of Energy and Climate will be offering more than $1,000 in rebates for anyone who purchases a bi-fuel vehicle.

The state already offers $1,500 rebates for vehicles that run on propane or natural gas, and starting Jan. 1, it will offer more than $1,000 in rebates vehicles powered by propane or natural gas that can also run on diesel or gasoline. These types of vehicles are mainly used by businesses.

Climate and Sustainability Section Lead Susan Love said it is part of an effort to curb carbon emissions by encouraging businesses to buy cleaner fuel vehicles.

“Vehicles account for almost 30 percent of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions every year,” Love said, “so that’s a significant component of our air emissions.”

The rebates are part of the state’s goal to reduce greenhouse gases by 30 percent by 2030.

Rebates are also offered for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Since the program’s launch in July 2015, it has been able to keep over 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide out of Delaware’s atmosphere each year.
