DUI arrests last week bring state total to 2,400 for year

Delaware Public Media

Delaware is six weeks into its 2015 DUI enforcement campaign -- with dozens of new arrests each week.

Police made 79 arrests for driving under the influence in Delaware last week. Seven of those happened at a DUI checkpoint -- the kind the state's been running every week now for the past six weeks.

All told, it brings the total DUI arrests this year up to just over 2,400 -- about as many as the same time last year, according to state records.

There were just over 4,000 DUI arrests total in Delaware for all of 2014. And 40 percent of fatal crashes in the first part of that year were alcohol-related.

The next DUI checkpoint this summer will take place in Newport this coming Friday. The DUI enforcement effort, called Checkpoint Strikeforce, will run for six months total.
