Firefly Festival goers brave rain to check in, set up camp

The 2016 edition of the Firefly Music Festival kicked-off Thursday - with the first bands hitting the stage at 5:15 pm.  Many festival-goers arrived early Thursday morning to check in despite torrential rainfall.

Among festival goers was Celine Morris from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

She won Firefly tickets for herself and a friend in an Instagram raffle through Urban Outfitters.

“I just buy stuff…all the time," she said. "They posted a picture and said like it, comment, tag a friend. That’s what I did. Like 7 times…and then I won.”

Celine says she shops at Urban Outfitters at least once a month, even though the closest location is Philadelphia.

18-year-old Hannah Jamison and her college roommate drove up to Firefly from Gaithersburg, Maryland Thursday morning. They’re coming to the festival for the first time to see Florence and the Machine, one of Jamison’s favorites.

However – on top of the rain – they had a minor setback Thursday morning as they made their way from Maryland to Delaware.

“We were driving up and it said low tire pressure and then we got out of the car and I called my dad and he was like, uh it’s fine and then I got here and it was super flat when I came back out from will call,” Jamison said.

She was on the phone with AAA when Eric Tolley got out of a truck parked next to her and offered to help.

He said he was planning to fix the tire on his friend’s truck this weekend, too.

“I was already trying to get him to change his so I already had it in me that I was going to do one…and then our neighbors…it was an easy case," he said. "I mean, why wait for AAA if you just have to change a tire. I couldn’t let it happen. I would have had a guilty conscience.”

Tolley is a mechanic and entrepreneur, and splits his time between Budapest, Hungary and Plymouth, Massachusetts.

He’s an avid festival goer, but hasn’t been to Firefly until this year. He and his friends should be easy to spot. They plan to create a totem pole with a Tyrannosaurus Rex flag on it at their campsite.

The campground opened Wednesday for those with premier camping and RV passes - allowing some veterans to stake out their spot early and avoid traffic.

The festival runs tonight through Sunday. Two Door Cinema Club headlines tonight - with Kings of Leon, Florence and the Machine and Mumford and Sons topping the bill over the weekend.
