Heat index brings scorching temperatures

Delaware Public Media

The National Weather Service warns that humidity could make it feel as hot as 109 degrees outside this week.

James Bunker with the National Weather Service said people can take basic precautions to stay safe in this warm weather. He advises people take breaks if they have to work outside, apply enough sunscreen and making sure to drink a lot of water.

“Stay away from caffeinated beverages like soda pop and any alcoholic beverages, because those will really make you dehydrated,” Bunker said.

People should check on elderly family and neighbors and be sure to bring pets inside, he said.

The National Weather Service predicts the hot temperatures should stick around through August 7.

The City of Wilmington has announced it will extend pool and spray park hours this week.

Sussex County  has cooling stations open to the public, as well.
