I-95/Route 141 interchange project ready to start

Delaware Public Media

Later this month, work will begin to address one of Delaware’s biggest traffic problems.

Last week, DelDOT gave the green light to contractor Mumford & Miller out of Middletown to begin a $31.7 million project revamping the northbound I-95 and Route 141 interchange.

The work is expected to take a little under two years in calendar terms, but could be delayed due to bad weather.

In addition to improving ramp connections onto northbound I-95, the project will also rebuild the two Route 141 bridges crossing over the interstate.

A safety study from 2009 found nearly 350 crashes in that area over the previous five years – much of that due to congestion problems in the morning and afternoons.

It’s the first of two projects in the area. After work is finished on this segment, construction will begin on making similar improvements to the southbound I-95 section.

The project breaks ground February 29th.
