Love and Shakespeare mingle in new production

The Delaware Shakespeare Festival is drumming up romance with a pair of performances in Kent and Sussex Counties.

“Shakespeare and St. Valentine” features readings, songs and humor at both the Painted Stave Distilling in Smyrna and Dew Point Brewing Co. in Yorklyn.

"So we’ve got Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like it and Twelfth Night. We kind of go towards romantic comedies," Artistic Director David Stradley said.

He said they will perform songs inspired by Shakespeare, including “Romeo and Juliet” by Dire Straits.

"It’s a little over an hour long. We’ve got four actors who are also musicians. So we read some kind of great Shakespeare love scenes. We sing some songs that are inspired by Shakespeare. We have some fun with the audience."

But even though the event celebrates Valentine’s Day, Stradley said dates are not required.

“Shakespeare and St. Valentine” is Saturday Feb. 11 at Painted Stave Distilling in Smyrna and Sunday Feb. 12 at Dew Point Brewing Co. in Yorklyn.
