Delmarva Power donated 17 Bulletproof White Boards to Pleasantville Elementary School in the Colonial School District Thursday. They look like portable dry erase boards- but can also act as a shield against a gunman.
"They’re handheld. So they can write on them with dry-erase markers during instruction time. And some of them do use them for that reason," says Lauren Wilson, a spokesperson for the District.
A little over a year ago, the Colonial School District received a donation of 121 bulletproof whiteboards - enough for each classroom at Gunning Bedford Middle School.
]Wilson says even though there’s never been an incident involving a gunman at Colonial, the boards are still important.
"We see this as a proactive approach to keeping our students safe, and of course, student safety is always a priority for our district," she says.
If it weren’t for the donation, she adds, the boards would be too expensive for the district. They retail from just under $300 to $700.
State Senator Nicole Poore has asked the business community to make corporate donations of these boards which are manufactured by Hardwire, LLC - a military contractor.
